India and Myanmar: India's gateway to the ASEAN

Myanmar remains India's gateway to the ASEAN nations. Geo-politically, Myanmar occupies an important place for India's 'Look East' policies of building up relationships with South East Asia, as Myanmar shares common borders with Laos and Thailand.  India and Myanmar share a long land border of over 1640 km and a maritime boundary in the Bay of Bengal. Moreover, Myanmar being the only ASEAN Country having border with India, is an important link between India and South East Asia. It is pertinent to refer as there are no contentious issues looming over India-Myanmar relations. This provides a stage for viable strategic partnership. India has scope in tie-ups in Myanmar in the railway sector. Trains in Myanmar run on meter gauge and its rolling stock is similar to that of India. Myanmar is also keen to sell its surplus power to India. Apart from a boundary that stretches over more than 1640 kilometres and borders four North-Eastern states of India, there is a large population of persons of Indian origin in Myanmar. Bilateral relations are reflective of these multifarious and traditional linkages and the two countries live side by side as close neighbours based on the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence.

India has clarified that Russia will remain an “indispensable” partner for India’s defence needs.  But at the same time, India stressed that the bilateral ties should adapt to changing times to address challenges. During the visit of Indian PM, India hailed that the India-Russia relations are marked by “abiding comfort with each other” and the warmth and goodwill between the people ensure that the strategic partnership will continue to grow in strength and relevance in the changing world. The joint statement, after the 14th annual series summit, specified that both sides “agreed to expeditiously finalise” the General Framework Agreement and the Techno-Commercial Offer for nuclear power reactor units 3 and 4. But the nuclear deal was not signed over liability provisions. It is to be referred that Russia was the first country with which India signed a Declaration of Strategic Partnership in 2000.

Safeguarding European monetary union

Crisis has its own utility in human life. When things go normally, people tend to overlook fundamental systemic anomalies believing that they hardly exist. It is only when things do not remain normal any longer and a crisis situation looms large, do people recognize the  anomalies and the systemic faults even as they struggle to find the reasons for the crisis. What follows are reforms aimed at correcting the faults and thereby ensuring that a similar crisis does not occur in the near and distant future. In the process of bringing the global economy back on track, much needed global economic reforms agreed by the major economies of the world, albeit after much debate and deliberation finally seem to be on the anvil.
G20, in order to fight economic slowdown and combat corruption, has expressed confidence that $450 billion firepower of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) would help in safeguarding financial stability and preventing global crisis.  It has called for collective action to deal with financial market tensions and promote trade, growth and jobs. The entire cynosure of the summit was to evolve effective ways to get rid of contagious eurozone debt crisis. G20 has urged Europe to take concerted effort to resolve financial crisis. The European leaders said they will take all necessary measures to safeguard the integrity and stability of the euro zone to improve the functioning of the financial markets.
